While it tells the story about one battalions experiences conducting counter-insurgency operations in Iraq during the first year of the war, it does so with the intent of uncovering lessons in organizational leadership that can be applied by any leader in any organization. In exposing these leadership lessons the book reveals the struggles and constraints of typical mid level Army Officers as they attempted to understand the environment they found themselves in (hot, hostile and hapless) and apply their training and tactics to a conflict they werent entirely prepared for. In doing so they overcame challenges that any organizational leader may face- how to translate and communicate vision into measurable goals, how to accomplish the same number of tasks with fewer resources, and when and where to accept risk. In addition to the lessons in organizational leadership, the military experiences and lessons learned gained over nine months of counter-insurgency operations will hopefully prove informative and useful to future generations. While not necessarily authoritative, the lessons learned have been shaped through the prism of multiple deployments and six years of reflection.
