The normal is extraordinarily un normal to most of us. The thought of hurting a child, let alone your own child make some of us sick to our stomachs. Yet, everyday four children under the age of three die due to child abuse and neglect. As a child I spend lazy weekend mornings with my father as he taught me how to shoot a weapon. I watched as his demeanor would change from social to anti-social at the drop of a hat. I remember the look in his eyes when he would come towards me with his belt. I longed to be on his good side because I thought if I could just be his favorite then maybe he would not hurt me. I did this often at the expense of my own mother, joining him in his taunts. Telling her how fat she was or agreeing with him when he said she was stupid. I would yell at her and tell her not to make him so mad, just to do what he said. Oh, the wisdom of a five year old. Child abuse is a disease that last a life time. This book is filled with experiences, both good and bad. The cry is simple: it should not hurt to be a child.
